The total population of Mitchelstown, including its hinterland catchment is current at 11,968 (CSO, 2002). The population of the town itself increased by 4.7% from 1996 to 2002 (to 4,621 persons) and is predicted to continue to increase over the coming years.

47.1 ha has been zoned for open – space and recreational use. The majority of this land is situated in three distinct land parcels on the eastern side of the town, and in the vicinity of the Castle Demesne, which will act as a recreational emenity focal point for the town. Areas of amenity also include the river bank and its proposed associated walks and the St. Fanahan’s Well walkway.
